2010 Dig Afognak Schedule

 

NVA's Dig Afognak schedule and registration forms are now available.  Please monitor this site regularly for updated information. 

Dig Afognak camps are for youth ages 9-17, with the exception of Afognak Shareholder's camp.  Registration fees for camp are $25 for NVA tribal members and $45 for non-members.   The dates Dig Afognak Beachfor this camp season are as follows:

Camp #1

Leadership Camp

June 21 - June 25

NVA’s Leadership Camp is specifically geared towards our teenage youth. This group will learn the importance of understanding culture and personal identity. Through outdoor adventure activities, hands on culture projects, teachings of respected Elders, numerous professionals, and role models, participants will gain self-confidence and comfortable decision making for their future endeavors.  This camp is a partnership with the Kodiak Island Borough School District, attendance and successful completion of this camp, the student will achieve a 1/2 language arts credit. Youth ages 13 through 17 are invited. 

Camp #2

Adventure E.A.R.T.H. (Earth Awareness- Renewing Traditions and Heritage)

June 28 - July 2

During Adventure E.A.R.T.H (Earth Awareness – Renewing Traditions & Heritage) camp youth participants will learn about environmental risks we face today. Participants will learn and perform ways to keep our land healthy and safe from pollutants, about alternative energy and renewable resources through both modern and traditional knowledge.                                                            Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.

Camp #3

Afognak Shareholder's Camp

July 8 - July 12

Afognak Native Corporation (ANC) is sponsoring this camp for ANC Shareholders and their spouse or immediate family member. Participants are invited to take part in cultural activities such as skin sewing, Alutiiq language, visit with long lost friends, and reminisce while touring the old village of Afognak.                                                                                                              Afognak Native Corporation Shareholders of all ages are invited.

** Fourth Annual Afognak Family Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 10 **

Camp #4

Cauyaq "Music" Camp

July 15 - July 19

Youth participants will engage with Elders and culture bearers learning and performing traditional Alutiiq dance, music, songs, and more. Campers will have the opportunity to play traditional instruments and make dance regalia. Participants will apply what they have learned towards creating new and modern expressions that appeal to today’s youth.                                                                                            Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.
 

Camp #5

Harvesting Camp

July 22 - July 26

Participants will take part in Alutiiq subsistence activities with local Elders and adult mentors, harvesting, preparing, and preserving traditional foods. Harvesting activities are designed to teach, preserve and pass down Alutiiq subsistence traditions.
Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited. 
 

Camp #6

Survivor: Dig Afognak

July 29 - August 2

Inspired by the TV series “Survivor” NVA is offering a camp illustrating important outdoor and wilderness survival techniques through fun outdoor activities, games, and competitions. This camp will be guided by survival experts such as local military representatives and of course Native Elders. NVA is challenging youth to have a great time at camp and to “Survive – Dig Afognak!”                               Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.
