2012 Dig Afognak Schedule

 

NVA's Dig Afognak schedule and registration forms are now available.  Please monitor this site regularly for updated information. 

Dig Afognak camps are fDig Afognak's Yurtor youth ages 9-17, with the exception of Afognak Shareholder's camp.  Registration fees for camp are $100 for NVA tribal members and their children and $200 for non-members.   Limited scholarships are available, a completed scholarship application is required.  Kodiak Island Housing Authority participants and Elders are exempt from all fees.

The dates for this camp season are as follows:

Camp #1

Sun'aa'aq (Teen) Camp

June 27 - July 2

Sun'aa'aq Camp is specifically geared towards our teenage youth ages 13-18. Through a partnership with the Kodiak Island School District the youth have an opportunity to earn 1/2 of a high school language arts credit by writing essays and conducting interviews.  In addition, the participants will learn the importance of understanding cultures and personal identity, we hope they will gain self-confidence and become comfortable in decision making for their future endeavors.  In order to receive the credit for this camp, the participant must be a registered student with the Kodiak Island Borough School District and entering the 8th through 12th grade. 

Camp #2

Traditional Harvesting Camp

July 6 - July 10

Participants will take part in Alutiiq subsistence activies with local Elders and adult mentors, harvesting, preparing, and preserving traditional foods.  Harvesting activities are designed to teach, preserve, and pass down Alutiiq subsistence traditions while incorporating our respect for the land and environment.  Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.

Camp #3

Afognak Shareholder's Camp

July 13 - July 17

Afognak Native Corporation (ANC) is sponsoring this camp for ANC Shareholders, their spouse or an immediate family member. Participants are invited to take part in cultural activities such as skin sewing, Alutiiq language lessons, Afognak genealogy and reminiscing with long lost friends while touring the old village of Afognak.  Shareholders will have an opportunity to do their subsistence fishing and will be able to smoke and can their catch.

Camp #4

Adventure E.A.R.T.H. (Earth Awareness- Renewing Traditions and Heritage)

July 20 - July 24

During Adventure E.A.R.T.H (Earth Awareness - Renewing Traditions & Heritage) camp youth participants will learn about environmental risks we face today and the importance of protecting our environment.  With the help of our Elders and local Professionals the participants will learn the impact pollutants have on our land and sea.  They will also learn different ways to recycle through crafts.   Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.

Camp #5

Survivor Camp

July 27 through August 1

During Survivor Camp the youth will learn important wilderness survival techniques through fun outdoor activities, games and competitions.  The participants will learn about gun safety and have the opportunity to shoot a rifle, practice archery, learn to read a compass and use a GPS, administer first aid, practice using survival suits, learn about edible and poisonous plants and seaweed, and learn how to build shelters and fires.  This camp is guided by community survival experts from the USCG, National Guard and of course, our local Elders and Teachers. Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.

Camp #6

Cauyaq "Music" Camp

August 3 - August 7

Youth participants will engage with Elders and culture bearers to learn traditional Alutiiq dance, music, songs, and more. Campers will have the opportunity to play traditional instruments and make dance regalia. Participants will apply what they have learned towards creating new and modern expressions that appeal to today’s youth by participating in an evening of camp performances. Youth ages 9 through 14 are invited.
