Indian Alcohol and Substance Abuse

The purpose of the Indian Alcohol and Substance Abuse program is to increase community awareness on the unique substance abuse issues facing Kodiak, to expand prevention efforts with locally driven drug-free/anti-meth media campaigns, and to increase awareness of available treatment services available on Kodiak Island.

Cama'i Positive Choices Camp

Focusing on assisting youth in developing conflict resolution skills, respect for oneself and the environment, decision making skills, and confidence building exercises.

The Native Village of Afognak offered three, 6-day camps at the remote Muskomee Lodge on Afognak Island July 10 - August 5, 2011.  This camp focused on assisting youth entering 7th—10th grade in developing conflict resolution skills, respect for oneself and the environment, decision making skills, and confidence building exercises. The camp was offered at no-cost to native and non-native participants, however, limited space was available

Our Commitment
The Cama’i Positive Choices Camp is committed to providing emotional and social support to youth in our community.

Youth
Through this camp, NVA targeted youth whose parents, caregivers, and/or school officials might be concerned about: showing disrespect to their parents, coaches, or school officials, making poor choices, getting poor grades, etc. Through this camp, the camp directors developed the youth physically, mentally, and socially. They provided the skills to build their character, their self-esteem, and facilitate positive attitudes. The camp’s goal was to give the youth an opportunity to make new friends, learn to work effectively, evaluate their own skills and weaknesses, and be motivated by successful role models.
